West Wales Business Initiative

The West Wales Business Initiative (WWBI), formed in 1990 by local Business and Community Leaders, has since then been working to influence both central and local government to invest more in the capital infrastructure of Wales. Chaired by local Community leaders, the group was then known as the Amman Business Initiative and was formed when it became clear that Valeo Climate Control were to relocate and that Betws Mine was to be closed.
In February 1991, the Secretary of Wales sent a team of senior civil servants from the Welsh Office to meet us and take our views. We were encouraged to work with the local authorities and the WDA to put forward a costed plan of action for the area. Following a meeting with the Chief Executives of Dyfed County Council and Dinefwr Borough, the WDA appointed consultants to carry out an economic review of the Valley to which the ABI made a financial contribution. This was done in the last 6 months of 1991. The result of this was a limited regeneration of the Ammanford Town centre.
In 1996 members met with the Secretary of State for Wales, William Hague, and sent a delegation to Parliament to lobby for a different approach. We have also met several times with most Senior Officers in the Assembly Economic Development Department and the late WDA. In 2000 we met with Rhodri Morgan; in 2002/04 with Andrew Davies and in 2008, very briefly with Ieuan Wyn Jones. Regrettably, nothing has ever come of these meetings. Indeed, many of our letters and submissions have gone unanswered.
The Business Initiative does not claim to represent anyone. Its Objectives are set out on the following sheet. The WWBI is a very informal gathering of businesspeople and community leaders meeting as issues arise or on request. Membership is open to any private individual who can show a commitment to the area and is preferably in business.
The WWBI believes that the quickest and most constructive way to address the problems of Wales is to boost the economy by generating investment in business; existing and new, and to re-balance the Welsh economy away from its reliance on the public sector. This means tough decisions by the National Assembly to reduce the reliance on and size of the public sector.
In 2008, in conjunction with other private sector organizations we submitted an All Wales Petition, signed by 50 companies, calling on WAG to change its policy on Economic Development, to itself invest in the economy, review the current economic situation in Wales and address the decline in manufacturing industry with the resultant loss of capacity, knowledge and skills. Following this the WWBI submitted a detailed economic plan to the Assembly. A Seminar was held in Swansea in March 2009 to review the current economic situation in West Wales. Later in March 9 we were invited to make a presentation to the Assembly Enterprise and Learning Committee on the economic problems of Wales. The National Assembly chose to ignore our proposals and this has resulted in the continuing decline in the Welsh economy at a faster rate than that experienced by the rest of the UK. Indeed, to compound matters in September 2009 the Deputy First Minister has introduced swingeing cuts to the economic development budget. At the same time jobs in the public sector continue to spiral.
In 2010 the WWBI held a series of meetings highlighting the constraints on Welsh business, including the negative policies of the assembly, the banking sector and transport.
